There are 15 glass roundels to correspond with the maximum number of daylight/night hours. For example, on the summer solstice there are 14.5 hours of sunlight, and 9.5 hours of the night, and vice versa during the winter solstice. British charter engineer and historian of Islamic technology Donald R. Hill (1974) who held a special interest in Al-Jazari’s achievements wrote:
