About this deal

Lilly still reels from the agony of loosing her friend Gemma after meeting her soulmate, Gemma's ex boyfriend Anton. With a small baby and a book just published, she has a lot on her plate when Anton decides they should buy a house together. A man appears with a scythe over his shoulder, and the narrator grabs this man’s drinks can and drinks from it gladly. He then sees the old man close the gate and tell him that this is where his road ends. The story concludes with the narrator falling asleep, and, as he drifts off, recognising the man with the scythe as his own brother who had left the road a year or so ago. The Other Side of the Hedge’ has the force of an allegory, and it’s clear that everything in the story is symbolic rather than literal. The road down which the narrator walks is life, whose monotony is occasionally challenging, but the alternative is to stop and ‘rest’ (i.e., die) and give up life forever. When he leaves the road and goes through the hedge, he dies, returning to the Edenic world of humanity before life and ‘the road’ existed. However, the road also symbolises a particular view of life, which is predicated on progress, improvement, and development: especially scientific and technological development (hence the pedometer). c)to say that my front room needed painting and would he come with his dust sheets, rollers, brushes, masking tape and a large bag of assorted chocolate bars. Her father leaves her mother and for some reason, her mother becomes and helpless slag and she has to take care of her.

But if you still think that the city is still under authoritarian regime and is uninhabitable, then I suggest that you read this book and see how the western media has bent the situation that between 2019 and 2020 completely out of shape to paint China in a dark light. Oh, and also come to the city and have a look for yourself (you could probably come during the Pandemic and you'll still get better treatment here than many places around the world). As they continue to walk around the place, the narrator sees Eliza Dimbleby, and this surprises him because he knows she is due to give a lecture that evening. He then finds his watch has stopped. The old man tells him that people often meet others they knew from the road in this place and are astonished to see familiar faces. Gemma. GET OVER IT. Yes, your best friend "stole" your boyfriend (not EVEN), but it happened THREE YEARS ago. And don't even get me started on Gemma's mother. What an IDIOT. I can understand being devastated after your husband of thirty-five years leaves you for a younger woman, but to make your idiot daughter take care of you for MONTHS as if you're terminally ill? GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK. As always she was kitted out in the pristine pastels of baby clothes and her little plimsolls were so white my eyes ached.
