When it comes to manga, this is a one read people should invested on. I love Akira personally because of its sheer epic story of man versus Godhood and any thing that writes about power, this is the book people of all reader types should read. It’s incredibly challenging to write interesting and engaging preliminary battles and conflicts like this, but Otomo accomplishes it all brilliantly. This volume also ties together most of the hanging story threads and fills in the remaining gaps in exposition. Kei has firmly and confidently taken center stage as the book’s actual protagonist (Kaneda is just a predictable, if charismatic, hot-head). Otomo also juggles the many different forces in play, keeping them urgent and mutually menacing while also orchestrating the complex plotting and characterization of a long and detailed story. With the help of Kiyoko, Masaru, and a resurrected Takashi, Akira is able to cancel out Tetsuo's explosion with one of his own. Some pretty flashy action in this one, but more of the same nonetheless. The romance between Kei and the protagonist seems forced and undeveloped. The conflict feels somewhat meaningless since we still don’t really know much about the world, the setting or have much reason to care about the characters. IN THE 21ST CENTURY, the once glittering Neo-Tokyo lies in ruin, leveled in minutes by the infinite power of the child psychic Akira. From the flooded wasteland of rubble and anarchy rises the Great Tokyo Empire, populated by a ragtag army of zealots and crazies who worship and fear Akira ad his mad prime minister, Tetsuo, and angry teen with immense powers of his own— and equally immense, twisted ambitions. The world at large is not taking the threat lying down, and the military strength of the planet is massing to take on the empire, but will technology's most advanced weaponry be enough to destroy Akira? And are Tetsuo's rapidly growing paranormal abilities a potentially greater threat? The Colonel reaches Miyako's temple with little Kiyoko, but he requires medical attention. He goes off again with Kei to retrieve a wounded and unconscious Chiyoko. They fight many crazy and intense battles to get there and bring her to Miyako.

A video game, simply titled Akira, based on the animated film was released on December 24, 1988, by Taito for the Famicom console. [17] The game has the player in the role of Kaneda, with the storyline starting with Kaneda and his motorcycle gang in police custody. In 1994, a British-made action game was released for the Amiga CD32 and it's considered one of the console's worst games. [80] [81] In 2002, Bandai released a pinball simulation titled Akira Psycho Ball for the PlayStation 2. Britt, Ryan. "15 Cool Stories of How 'Star Trek' Ships Got Their Names". Inverse . No explanation has yet been given after several incidents of this occurrence. Tetsuo's demonstration of power: Tetsuo certainly is a showman. Blowing a crater in the moon big enough to change it's mass and affect the tides is an impressive show of power. Permanently altering our earth's natural satellite is one way to get people's attention. Since weaning himself from drugs, Tetsuo's power is developing so fast that his power now rivals that of Akira. The artwork in this particular section was also really beautiful. It's not their presence that bothers me, it's that they have so far been totally inconsequential to the plot so I'm not sure why they are even part of the storyline at this point. I don't believe for a second that they will be the ones to defeat Akira or Tetsuo. That likely rests with Kei, the Espers, and possibly Kaneda. I hope that there is something that happens in the next volume to justify their presence in the story. a b c Matt Schley. "The enduring appeal of 'Akira,' the manga". The Japan Times . The main characters were easy to recognize, regardless of their circumstances or outfits, which is not true of many manga.
