About this deal

The SP53 weighs in at 35kg so the fact that its self-propelled means you don’t physically have to push it. All you have to do it concentrate on steering it. Cutting Settings Once I had built the mower and filled the engine with oil and fuel, it was time to start the engine. There is no ignition key on this Mountfield SP53, so for added safety, Mountfield has gone with a Operator Presence Control (OPC) lever – the operator must have at least one hand griping the safety handle before the machine will start. If the control handle is released, the engine will stop.

All possible cutting modes are provided for, with a collection bag and mulch plug both included as standard. You can also of course opt for discharge mode instead by removing both items completely. The grass bag itself is massive 60 litres, the perfect accompaniment to the 51 cm cutting length. This will enable to work fast and with minimal interruption. Although having said that the angle at which the grass bag sits does mean the bag won’t fill to maximum capacity before it starts to shed grass rather than collect it, so this is definitely an area for improvement in the design. The mower powered through grass which was a good 5 inches tall and the rear discharge worked perfectly, leaving the cuttings on the ground. If creating a striped finish when you mow the lawn is important to you, choose another machine. This mower has wheels instead of a rear roller so it won’t leave stripes. This model represents excellent value for money. Powered by a Mountfield 100cc 4 stroke engine, the HP41 hand propelled lawnmower is ideal for small to medium sized lawns. The engine is very easy to start, with a standard recoil rope system and will give many years of trouble-free mowing. If you feel you can handle the 20kg weight and you’d prefer to save yourself some money, Mountfield make the same mower without the self-propelling feature.

Engine: 160cc, 4-stroke; Cutting Width: 51cm; Grass Box Capacity: 60 Litres; Self-Propelled: Yes; Weight: 35kg; Self-Propelled: Yes; Warranty: 2 Years; Honda’s intelligent Auto Choke Comfort System (ACS) ensures ultra-reliable ignition under all conditions; while their high-specification Combustion Technology works to optimise power output, with the engine producing a substantial 4.2hp from a displacement of just 145cc. As a general rule, petrol lawn mowers are fairly heavy which means pushing them up and down the lawn can be tiring work. Especially if your lawns are sloped. In this Mountfield SP41 Petrol lawn mower review, we’re going to take a look at one of Mountfield’s most popular models. You’ll also see why I think it’s a contender for the best petrol mower for smaller lawns. Short Mountfield SP41 Review

As an example, my own rear garden is about 15 metres long and 7 metres in width. Multiply those 2 numbers together and you get 105 square metres. Then repeat that process for all your gardens and you will get an approximate square metre size. Mountfield engine (not the Honda variant) has full throttle control, allowing you to adjust the power to suit your requirements The good news is that Mountfield has an instructional video on their YouTube channel which shows you exactly how to do it.The Mountfield SP51H is a tough, dependable and easy to use a stylish mower. Self-propelled with power to the rear wheels, there is no need to push, making this an ideal mower for maintaining your lawn with minimal effort, especially if it has slopes. Powered by an industry leading 145cc Honda OHV Autochoke engine, it has a 51cm cutting width and 6 cutting heights ranging from 22-80mm. It is also fitted with a cone clutch transmission (DSC) for smooth acceleration. The SP51H has a deep drawn pressed steel chassis giving superior strength and collecting ability. That said, if you have intricately shaped lawns, it’s just too big. No matter how well the self-drive works.

Centralised height-of-cut adjustment makes what can be a troublesome process with lesser machines an easy one; larger-diameter drive-wheels provide superior manoeuvrability, especially when working on long grass. Complete with a large 60 litre grass collector, plus a mulching plug; meaning you don't always need to collect the grass and can recycle grass clippings into the lawn, saving time plus fertilising the lawn. It benefits from a robust powder coated steel chassis with front scalp plate, reducing scalping of the lawn and improving grass collection. Yes there are a few negatives as you can see above in the Cons section but these are really minor points and do not detract from the fact that this is yet again a quality Mountfield Self-Propelled Petrol Mower.A larger blade will draw more energy from the engine as it needs to cover a larger area on each rotation, completing the job at hand faster. The steel desk is of a high quality, built to last but there is no hose attachment for cleaning. The best part about it is that the clippings are blown into the turf and not left on the surface. As such you can’t see them and the finish is excellent. Maintenance I’ve spent several weeks with the Mountfield SP41 and for medium sized lawns, it’s really quite good. Assembly Supplied with mulch plug, a large 60-litre-capacity collector and a discharge chute, the Mountfield SP51H is capable of either bagging, recycling or rear-discharging your grass cuttings (the catcher has a dust- and pollen-retaining hard plastic top, and is made from canvas to save storage space). The Mountfield SP41 is an excellent, self-propelled petrol mower which is fairly cheap but cuts beautifully.
