About this deal

Caran D'Ache of Switzerland. Water-soluble wax pastels (coloured crayons). Suitable for numerous artistic techniques on a wide range of materials. Welsh Farm, Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastel on Sennelier Rough 140lb watercolour paper, (25.5x33cm) Next day, I added the tree structures and placed shadow onto the buildings using the dark grey pastel.

I personally do love how easy it is to do watercolour painting with Caran D’Ache Neocolor II, but my favourite way of using these pastels is actually a mix of both wet and dry. In my painting of Yu below, I have added the whites dry to the painting as a finishing touch for highlights. My painting of Yu Morisawa (a.k.a. Creamy Mami) using Caran D’Ache Neocolor II both wet and dry Scribbling onto a scrap of watercolour paper, I then added a solution of Sahara yellow followed by ultramarine blue into the sky. I created a grey wash and continued it right into the foreground then left the paper overnight to dry completely.

Cleaning your Neocolor Pastels

I hesitated to post these. But, you are here reading this for a review and examples, so it’s only fair that I show them. If I would have used less water, or a brush, things would have turned out differently. Edit 2021: It seems Caran d’Ache have discontinued the set of 120 as well as 42 colours in the range which is an absolute shame. The largest set available now is the set of 84. Test Paintings and Techniques “Coastal Sunset” 33.5 x 23cm painting, Caran d’Ache Neocolor IIs on Fabriano Artistico HP watercolour paper. In a lot of my watercolor paintings, I use colored pencils to build color in an area or add texture, and these pastels would be excellent for doing that. crayons, in the colours above plus: golden yellow, light orange, reddish orange, purple violet, light violet 2, light ultramarine, jade, grass green, dark green, linden green

Another strength of them being rewettable is erasing – if you make a mistake, most of the pigment can be lifted off by dabbing it with a damp cloth and the remaining errant pigment can be covered up with additional layers of crayon. There’s no contest, really. These watersoluble pastels are a cut above the rest. All in all I rate the Caran d’Ache Neocolor II line… 9/10
