About this deal

Because the 360 lens is vulnerable to damage, there’s a slide-on rubber protector that can be used whether or not the module is attached to the camera. Of course, the resolution boost won't mean much unless you have the hardware to actually view 8K media. But as always, the option to future-proof your footage is always appreciated, and the extra pixels open up more options for editing without noticeably compromising image clarity. This Insta360 One RS action camera requires almost no instruction to start recording immersive 360-degree videos, 360-degree stills, and wide-angle videos and stills. The small, easily navigable touchscreen or the app on your smartphone can be intuitively used for setting the myriad of capture modes. You can also control the camera from an Apple Watch. Being able to effortlessly pair the 360 Lens capabilities with the 4K Boost lens makes these the only cameras that can offer such a powerful combo. The importance of an action camera’s Core and processor cannot be underestimated. The new ONE RS Core is a beast inside and out, adding the following benefits vs the old ONE R Core:

When comparing side by side there is an obvious difference in quality with the 4K Boost Mod coming out on top.

Design Differences

The Insta360 One RS is three components— a control module with a touchscreen, a lens module (360, 4K Boost 150-degree wide-angle lens, or a Leica 1-inch Wide Angle lens), and a battery base that holds all the pieces together. You can use this app to reframe your 360 videos which allows for a lot of creativity. You can colour correct your videos, combine clips together, add music, change the speed along with many other options. There are also a dozen special effects that are automatically created by the app which makes creating unique clips very easy. It will come as no surprise that both of these camera utilise the same software. The Insta360 App is actually one of the best reasons to get either of these cameras as it feature so many special effects and a full video editor. Last time I tested a 360-degree cam, I did the editing in Final Cut Pro, but this time I opted to try Insta360 Studio, the company’s own editing app. This is free, but you do need to enter the serial number of your camera to activate it.

Unfortunately, creating a private stream for just a few invitees isn't possible on Facebook, as you can only restrict your post to either yourself, your friends, or the public. This meant I couldn't create a 360 livestream just for my family, which is one of the reasons I was so interested in investigating the ONE RS. The app also notes that you can only broadcast 30 minutes of live 360 video at a time. The 6k footage looks amazing, but there are limitations of only being edited on desktop and there’s no ability currently to step down the footage if you want to edit on a mobile or tablet device - or if you used the wrong mode in a test. As I did.

Users can now take higher resolution videos with the 4K Boost lens, with a max of 6016 x 2560 at 25 FPS as compared to 4000 x 3000 at 30 FPS. Photo resolution has also gotten a boost, reaching up to 8000 x 6000 — twice the maximum resolution of the ONE R. You can choose your aspect ratio, and also choose natural view or some special effects. The only effect I used was Tiny Planet for the opening and closing – everything else was Natural View. Saying said this, the Insta360 is a more complete sports camera being able to record both 360º degree videos and the typical wide-angle sports cam videos. You can edit all your pictures and videos on the Insta360 app which works great, possibly the most complete. This seemed a very neat feature in early 2020, just a short while after the DJI Osmo Action gave us a dual-display action camera option. But today we’re two generations into dual-screen GoPros, and a small preview image is one of the biggest sacrifices involved here. Boost Lens: This is an upgrade to the previous 4K Wide Angle Lens. Thanks to a larger 1/2" 48MP sensor, it shoots more detailed 4K 60fps video and 48MP photos. Two new innovative modes are also available: 6K Widescreen mode for ultra-high-res 2.35:1 videos and Active HDR mode for better highlights and shadows in action videos.

Insta360 One RS vs Insta360 X3

Compatible with iOS mobile devices with chips A11 or above and iOS version 11.0 or above, including iPhone SE 2, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 mini, iPad Air (2020), iPad Pro and newer iPad models. However, the Insta360 One RS does exhibit some issues you just don't see in a GoPro. These include aliasing, particularly cast off small highlight areas like reflections on cars. You will also see shimmering in tight patterned areas, like the roof tiles of buildings and gravel. We don’t see any of this shimmering or aliasing in the GoPro video.
