About this deal

As important as it is to have moisture in the air, too much can cause problems, from mould growth to making it feel hotter as a result of sweat being unable to evaporate. Dehumidifiers are the solution, but many are expensive to run and fiddly to use. The MeacoDry Arete One aims to fix that. It’s relatively cheap to run and can aim for an ideal humidity level automatically, so you’ll never over-dry your air. Design and Features As well as the standard mode, there’s a laundry mode, which sets the target relative humidity to 35% and runs the machine for a maximum of six hours. It’s designed to help dry laundry hanging on a clothes rail. Moisture is always in the air around us, and isn’t created by just drying washing indoors. It can come from everyday activities such as cooking, showering and even breathing. I suffer from hayfever, and when I left the dehumidifier running all night, I woke up and didn’t have any allergy symptoms at all. Yes there is an option of a charcoal filter to remove smells and volatile organic compounds from the air

The unit isn't the lightest or most compact we've tested, but then we wouldn't expect that from a machine this powerful. However, built-in wheels, a retractable carry handle, and cable tidy make it easier to move around the house and store neatly away when it's not in use. It's also important not to confuse the extraction rate with a dehumidifiers water tank capacity. As both are generally measured in litres or millilitres this can sometimes cause confusion. Most dehumidifiers have their noise levels listed in their specifications, although in practice we didn't find that much variation between models, with most falling somewhere between 35 and 45dB.

How does the Meaco Arete One perform day-to-day?

Compressor dehumidifiers tend to be the most common design available in the UK. They work by drawing air into the dehumidifier via a fan, and then running the air over over cold coils to condense the moisture from it, whereby the condensed water is collected in a water tank. The coils are kept cool by refrigerant which means the unit also needs a compressor built in. The only downside of compressor dehumidifiers is that they need the air to be warm for this process to work. Most will work above 5°C, but they're most efficient at an ambient temperature of around 20°C (depending on the individual model). Dehumidifier users most often leave their dehumidifier near bedrooms and in operation for the majority of the time. As such, quiet operation was essential. The Arete range runs twice as quiet as any other comparable compressor dehumidifier on the market. A dehumidifier isn't the most exciting of household appliances, but it's obvious that attention has still been paid to the MeacoDry Arete One dehumidifier's design. The unit looks both sleek and modern, with simple monochromestyling that blends easily into a room without standing out too much. This feature is really smart and again, not one I had seen before in a dehumidifier. While some may be hesitant about leaving them on for prolonged periods of time, they are actually very affordable to run.

Overall, if you can put up with its increased noise volume and absorb the higher running costs, we think thePro Breeze 20L Premium Dehumidifier with Special Laundry Modeis a good buy. It's definitely the best dehumidifier for drying clothes that we've tested, and anything that makes wet-weather laundry days easier is a win in our books. Power requirements change, too. The first example draws 179W, while the second one requires 211W. At the maximum draw, the MeacoDry Arete One uses 235W of power. That isn’t unusual for a compressor-based dehumidifier, working out at around 3.3p per hour. The alternative is a Peltier dehumidifier, which, although not specified, is likely the method the Silentnight 39899 600ml Dehumidifier uses. In contrast to a compressor dehumidifier, a Peltier dehumidifier uses a far quieter thermo-electric process to extract moisture from the air. I also found it very noisy. Even when the fan was set to low I could hear it over the TV, and I definitely couldn't have slept with it running. I also didn’t find it a great help with drying clothes, whilst it did take some of the moisture out of the garments, it didn’t leave them airing-cupboard dry like the best dehumidifiers I've tested.

How easy is the MeacoDry Arete One to set up?

It can't quite beat the MeacoDry Arete One on overall performance, but if you're willing to put up with noisier operation and higher running costs in exchange for its powerful performance, then this Pro Breeze model will make short work of getting wet washing ready for the airing cupboard. I was testing the 12L Arete One, which means that it can extract up to 12 litres of moisture from the air per day. And thanks to a generous 2.5L water tank, there's plenty of capacity to collect this condensed water. That means you don't need to constantly empty the dehumidifier as I found I was doing with other models.

Designed in Britain for the British weather, using teams based in London, Cambridge and Guildford, Arete® is designed to blend perfectly into your home without losing any of the practical functionality – so it works brilliantly and it looks fantastic. Hidden in plain sight and working hard for a better home environment, you’ll soon wonder how you did without it. I was amazed at just how smart this machine was, and was confident my clothing would dry within the six hours. To test it out, I placed an airer full of wet clothing in my spare room along with the dehumidifier and let it do its thing. If you’re looking for a small dehumidifier, then the Russell Hobbs RHDH1061G Portable Dehumidifier is about as compact as it gets, measuring just H22 x W14 x D14cm and weighing in at 0.9kg. Plus, the MeacoDry Arete One dehumidifier'sSmart Laundrymodeworks brilliantly for drying washing indoors – wet laundry was dry in hours rather than the days it can usually take in my draughty Victorian terrace. The Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier is a pretty affordable compressor dehumidifier as these things go, which is reflected in its rather basic design. That’s a great combination – no need to buy a separate dehumidifier and air purifier: Arete® One does it all for you. And, with a modern, stylish design, easy-touch controls and an industry-leading 5-year warranty, this is the only dehumidifier you’ll ever need. In my opinion noise levels are where the Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy dehumidifieris really let down. Its noise rating is 40dB, but as I've discovered whilst testing a number of small appliances, it's the quailty of the noise as well as the volume that determines how intrusive it will be. I was less impressed by the unit's sleep function, as it meant I couldn’t adjust the fan speed, and although this dehumidifier is noisy in all modes (more on that below), it is even more so on a high fan setting. The control panel on Arete One has simple and clearly laid out controls. The buttons that you use most often are larger; the buttons that you hardly ever use are small. Large buttons include controls for Smart Humidity Control, Night and Laundry Mode either of which can be set by pressing just one button.

The Arete One also has an automatic shut-off function when its water tank is full. At this point, the unit will beep and a red light will be displayed to alert you that the tank needs emptying. This is a useful feature that cheaper dehumidifiers tend not to have, and gives peace of mind that your home's flooring isn't going to be damaged by any overspill. There's also a small window on the front of the dehumidifier that shows you the current water levels. Night mode is significantly quieter than the regular mode, and it stays quiet until you turn it off. If I'm working from home I tend to keep it on night mode. What do you use your dehumidifier for? Does it meet your needs? The dehumidifier has a Smart Humidity Mode on the panel which sets the device to a target humidity of 55 percent, which is what Meaco typically recommends for a home. A good dehumidifier unit should fit seamlessly into your home. Quiet, easy to use and easy to move around your home, Arete® is designed to make your life simpler. And although it can't quite compete with the MeacoDry Arete One 12L Dehumidifier on energy efficiency, it is still relatively energy efficient, especially compared to other compressor dehumidifiers in the Pro Breeze range. The water extraction rate will depend on the temperature and relative humidity. At 10ºC and 60% relative humidity, the dehumidifier can remove 3.4 litres per day; at 20ºC and 60%, it can manage 8.5 litres per day. The dehumidifier has an amazing night mode too, which signals the device to reduce its fan speed, and turn off the display lights so you can place it in a bedroom or hallway without distractions. This handle feels far more robust than most that I've come across on other dehumidifiers and is really easy to grip.
