About this deal

You can also easily wirelessly connect your phone or tablet to The Freestyle using Samsung’s Smart Things platform – or even, if you have a recent Samsung phone, by just tapping it against the projector’s bodywork. However, Samsung has surprised us before. The Premiere LSP9T performs much better than we expected. Until we try out The Freestyle, it’s hard to say for sure if it will be a disappointment, especially since Samsung has yet to reveal how much its projector will cost. You can even issue verbal instructions to the TV via Samsung’s built-in Bixby system (with Alexa and Google Assistant supported via external listening devices if you have them).

Samsung's new projector, The Freestyle, squeezes sophisticated picture processing, a long-life LED light source, and extensive smart TV capabilities into a compact body that's purpose-designed for flexibility and portability. Game Viewing. Turn on Game Mode, and The Freestyle shuts off extraneous picture processing to deliver 43.2-millisecond input lag. While a 1080p/60 Hz gaming display is pretty far from state-of-the-art these days, what I found is that my gaming devices—a PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox Series X, and an RTX 2080 SUPER-equipped 12-core gaming PC—all had the easiest time with that resolution and frame rate. I max out all the image quality settings on my PC, and the result looks almost as good as 4K from my PlayStation 4 Pro. And on all three machines, maintaining a solid and smooth 60 Hz frame rate didn't even cause the devices to break a sweat. The Freestyle projector comes with a 5w speakers with 360° sound for an immersive movie watching experience anywhere.

Measurements

Obviously we’re not talking about anything like the sort of light range you can get from a TV, even if you keep the projector’s image quite small. But our initial expectations that The Freestyle’s HDR support may prove to be at best pointless and at worst actually damaging to its performance prove unfounded.

This system is considered effective enough by the US’s Consumer Technology Association, though, to qualify as true 4K. And certainly 4K pictures look beautifully detailed, sharp and textured with the LSP9T. Not quite as pristine as the best Sony 4K models, perhaps, but a cut above most other ‘pseudo’ 4K DLP projectors. As a result, where the Premiere could handle some ambient light and still deliver a splendid image we expect The Freestyle will require a much darker viewing environment and may struggle to provide clarity in darker scenes. For this second-generation model, Samsung has included its SolarCell remote control, which means no changing batteries, and added a Gaming Hub to access cloud gaming. The Tizen smart system offers a greater choice of streaming apps and is more responsive, the built-in audio has been tweaked, and the luminance and longevity of the LED light source have been extended. The other big new feature is Smart Edge Blending, allowing you to combine two Freestyles into a single widescreen image that’s bigger and brighter. Using the SmartThings app and the camera on your mobile device, you blend the two beamers to look at photos or watch streaming videos.

The Freestyle 2023 now supports Samsung's Gaming Hub

Cable– Nearly every iPhone and Android device has a video output port. Most projectors still use HDMI as their standard input port, so a simple adapter from either the USB-C connector on an Android or HDMI connector on the iPhone will enable you to get the cable connected – all you need to do is change the source to start screen mirroring from your phone to a projector. Something else to consider is resolution. Smart projectors are much smaller than standard projectors, this makes resolution the first thing to go. For those who enjoy camping, and just want some form of entertainment next to the campfire, a lower resolution works. Mini projectors have the hardest time with resolution. But, not all smart projectors suffer from poor resolution. 4K Smart LED projectors are now on the market. If home entertainment is your preferred use, opt for 4K resolution. The highest-end smart projectors will call themselves “True 4K” projectors.

The Freestyle combines these key features with a built-in sound system and smart platform, allowing you to enjoy your favourite shows anywhere, while Smart Calibration can counter off-white surfaces for on-point colours too. But just how good is it? The Freestyle supports HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ via its internal apps and micro-HDMI, but the colour space doesn’t cover the full DCI-P3 gamut. Despite its limited brightness, the tone mapping is good, producing HDR images with a bit more punch compared to their SDR equivalent. When searching for the best portable projector, there are several key factors to consider. These include connectivity options, battery life, picture quality, and price. Portable projectors are designed to be versatile, catering to various environments and preferences thanks to their compact and lightweight design. By considering how you’re going to use it, you’ll get the right mix of features. We asked Luke Chen, senior business line manager at Viewsonic Europe, a display and projector specialist for his point of view (no pun intended). The Anker Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K has plenty of competition, but if you want a projector that will regularly work in a lot of different places around your home rather than outside it, there are few options that will do it as well and as easily as this one.
