About this deal

Be Cool reminded me of being dragged into a jewelry store at the mall. The merchandise is beautiful. My feet start to hurt a bit standing at the display counter. The service is impeccable but by now, my feet are really starting to get tired. By the time the transaction is finished, I'm happy to get out of there. By the time I reached the end of Be Cool, I'd figured out why, as great a fan as I am of Elmore Leonard, I really didn't cotton to Get Shorty or this sequel. The surface level of this is funny enough with its core idea of a gangster trying to get into the movie business, but where it achieves greatness is the twist it takes once Chili meets Michael. When his pitch for Harry’s movie isn’t getting through, Chili starts talking about his recent adventures, and Michael is intrigued. Without realizing it, Chili essentially begins pitching his story as it’s happening to Michael, and the short actor pounces on the idea of playing a loan shark. The problem is that Chili doesn’t know how it’s going to end yet. Get Shorty is one of Elmore Leonard's most entertaining novels with a cast populated by a group of great characters. Heading the group is a Miami loan shark named Chili Palmer who winds up in Hollywood while chasing down a guy who owes him money and who has done a great disappearing act. Elmore John Leonard Jr. (October 11, 1925–August 20, 2013) was an American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. His earliest novels, published in the 1950s, were Westerns, but he went on to specialize in crime fiction and suspense thrillers, many of which have been adapted into motion pictures. He married Beverly Clare Cline in 1949, and they had five children together—two daughters and three sons [17]—before divorcing in 1977. His second marriage in 1979, to Joan Leanne Lancaster (aka Joan Shepard), ended with her death in 1993. Later that same year, he married Christine Kent and they divorced in 2012. [18] [19] Leonard spent the last years of his life with his family in Oakland County, Michigan. He suffered a stroke on July 29, 2013. Initial reports stated that he was recovering, [20] but on August 20, 2013, Leonard passed away at his home in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills of stroke complications. Twenty-six of Leonard's novels and short stories have been adapted for the screen (19 as motion pictures and another seven as television programs). Chili does not really enjoy having to show respect to those fully connected because he often saw them be and talk idiotic, but he is content with his permanent lower status with the mafia. He and his ex-wife Debbie liked the benefits that came with the respect locals and business people had for him when they were aware of who Chili worked for - at least until Debbie got pregnant. She gave him an ultimatum - get out of the business - so he lied and said he had when they moved to Florida from Brooklyn. As far as she knew, he sold restaurant supplies in their new home. The woman in this case goes by the name of Linda Moon. Chili has heard her voice as she works setting up matches for a dating service and he becomes entranced. Linda is also a singer who has fallen on rough times in a competitive business. Petski, Denise (May 16, 2017). " 'Get Shorty' Gets Premiere Date On Epix; Unveils First-Look Photos". Mafioso Ernesto “Chili” Palmer is a character right out of mobster central casting except he is the real deal, that is, a character in ‘Get Shorty’ who is a fictional ‘real’ loan shark living in Florida. He can’t be completely part of the Mafia because he is Puerto Rican on his father’s side, but on his mother’s side he has uncles connected to a Brooklyn crew. Then again, maybe not. Leonard was notoriously unpretentious about his chosen profession. As Harry tells Chili while they drive along Sunset Boulevard looking at the homes of far more famous people, there’s only one type of writing guaranteed to make you a lot of money: ransom notes. Chili is a wise guy loan shark. He doesn’t use a gun. His style of intimidation is quiet, making the victim imagine bad things will happen if he doesn’t pay. Before he makes a loan, Chili tries to talk the borrower out of it saying you really don’t want to borrow from me. But they are desperate and do it.

McClurg, Jocelyn and Carol Memmott (August 20, 2013). "Author Elmore Leonard dies at 87". USA Today. Archived from the original on November 15, 2020 . Retrieved May 21, 2019. So why did Hollywood continually screw up adaptations of his work? Maybe because Hollywood understands plot a lot better than it understands story. Story is about things that happen, yes, but it’s also about character and tone and mood. It’s as much about the wandering as it is about the arrival. And all who wander, as the saying goes, are not lost. But studio executives don’t like wandering. Wandering freaks them out. Wandering smells like film and studio executives hate film; they barely like movies. (They are huge fans of product, though. Huge.) You can’t enjoy Elmore Leonard unless you enjoy wandering. And if you don’t know the difference between plot and story, you’re probably not going to get what he was doing either. There are times when you come across something you honestly where not expecting - and this book I have to say is one of them.

These two novels were never my favorite Elmore Leonard books mainly because both novels were the 1st I sensed that my favorite contemporary author of crime fiction was working from someone else’s research material. Leonard also contributed one chapter (the twelfth of thirteen) to the 1996 Miami Herald parody serial novel Naked Came the Manatee ( ISBN 0-449-00124-5). For his role as Chili Palmer, John Travolta received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film also received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. While some writers might have let this idea of a story unfolding and being pitched as a movie at the same time get too clever for its own good and been tempted to push the idea into complete nonsense, Leonard’s brevity and sharp plotting keep it grounded as a crime story with humor rather than letting it turn into some kind of meta-fiction writing exercise. As usual, you also get all the hallmarks of Leonard in his prime with great dialogue and memorable characters.
