About this deal

The two stories are interlinked, although set 30 years apart, and although this is an incredibly heart-wrenching tale, I absolutely adored it!

Reni Eddo-Lodge tackles some incredibly important issues in this hardcore read, and it was such an education for me. I thought the concept was really interesting; on the night she gets engaged to her long-term boyfriend, Dannie awakes to find herself in another apartment with another man. Our main man, Charlie, purchases a synthetic human, and when his girlfriend Miranda moves in, they have an interesting relationship that leads to some questionable moral dilemmas.I did think it was a great read overall, some of the essays were like nothing I’ve ever come across before. However, "The Life Before Us" was banned again during the tenure of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Allow yourself to be angry, be tired, be silly, be passionate – to give yourself a break, and just simply be.

After the above, I went for a bit more of an easy beach read – and it ended up being one of my favourites of the year!I read this a year ago and some of the story still stick with me so profoundly; Our Women On The Ground is a collection of essays from female Arab journalists covering world events in the Middle East. An unexpected tale, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and a great book to start the year’s list off with. From his beginnings at Lenôtre and then Fauchon, to the creation of Maison Pierre Hermé Paris in 1997, his biography looks back at the history of the man who, from Paris to Tokyo via Marrakech, laid the foundations of contemporary haute-pâtisserie. I believe this book was released a few years before Our House, so that may be why I felt like I didn’t connect with it in the same way – although it did keep me guessing until the very end, and it was quite an easy, gripping read. I’ve managed to get through a few books recently and it’s definitely helped to reignite my love for reading. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this book, it was perhaps a bit wild for me – but definitely something to look in to if you’re up for some science fiction with a twist!I was so excited to read this book, my first by Ann Patchett, I especially loved the sound of a book centred around a big old house with a whole lot of history. This follows the now familiar JLS formula: a diary, rich descriptions of nature, social observation, and few goody recipes.

In 1987, American director Harold Prince staged a short-lived musical version on Broadway under the title Roza with a libretto and lyrics by Julian More and music by Gilbert Becaud. La Vie Parisienne was a magical name which proclaimed itself proudly as the masthead of a way of life in which frivolity, wit and satire were as important and as relevant as literary and political intellectualism. I loved this book and I think the difficult subject matter was handled well – definitely a must read. Experience time stand still as you gaze upon the magnificent view of Singapore’s city skyline with glass in hand.Victor Arwas was one of the leading scholars and experts in the fine and decorative arts from the late nineteenth century onwards. What follows is an engaging, relatable, and heartfelt examination of what “reinventing yourself” really looks like: of how much of yourself it’s really possible to change, and what you both lose and gain when you do.
