The focus on readers learning how and why a method works and the positive 'can do' attitude that permeates the whole text make the book an absolute boon to anyone who feels that maths is not for them. Students are given a better chance of grasping the material that is being presented thanks to the use of visual aids and activities that require them to use multi-sensory approaches. I quickly learned that I had to think on my feet and come up with inventive ways of getting my message across, but it was all a bit hit and miss.This is the first GCSE maths study guide (covering number, proportion and algebra) that uses engaging multisensory methods of learning for students with specific learning differences. Interesting and varied in its effects on human emotion, behaviour, thought, and learning, neurodiversity is a fascinating and multifaceted aspect of human diversity. As a specialist dyscalculia teacher who isn't a secondary maths teacher, I'm really excited about using this book and can already see that my older pupils are going to benefit so much from it. The layout of the page, along with the worked examples and explanations, helped her make sense and comprehend a topic that she had previously found incomprehensible.

I could get on board with this chapter, the grid method is common, easily used wherever I am (even if my hand drawn grids look a little tipsy) and quite simply, simple. The book illustrates the effective use of a wide range of resources and manipulatives, and shows the children how important visualisation is in learning maths. It offers unique insight into why you may find maths extra challenging and gives practical advice on how you can adapt your studying processes to suit the way that you learn best. Since she has trouble with decimals, fractions, and percentages, I had my TA read through that section of the book. In addition to covering the more obvious specific learning challenges, it also delves into topics such as growth mindsets, learning styles, and metacognition.Sadly, the book didn’t go that far, and after some worked examples and plenty of practice questions (answers in the back of the book), we moved onto Chapter 2; place value and decimals.
