Due to the Crux being set up like a chess board, with the white zones being the Demonata's universe and the black zones being the Old Creature's universe, Lord Loss's obsession with chess prepared him for his destiny of becoming the last Demon Master. Lord Loss also has an obsession with chess, something that Grubbs Grady considers stupid and pointless. Lord Loss vowed to make the Gradys' deaths even more long and painful, then proceeded to kill all the people remaining in Slawter in the most painful ways he could think of.
Soon after, it appeared in Japan and America, where Shan's previous series, The Saga of Darren Shan, had sold millions. Grubbs, having quarrelled with his sister all his life doesn’t know what to make of this display of affection. His need to drain the sorrow from humans is so strong, he has foiled past attempts the Demonata made to destroy mankind.The only way to cure him is by winning three out of five simultaneous chess games with the powerfully magical demon master Lord Loss while another person battles his familiars. He then requests Bec to kill one of them, and is greatly pleased when she instead destroys all the souls from the Board, allowing Death/The Shadow to enter through Bec. The middle section was a little uneventful but it didn't impact the rest of the book negatively as it still moved quickly. Dervish rushes to save Grubbs when he's threatened, then Grubbs takes his place and makes a bad game worse.
Darren Shan is the number-one best-selling author of the series THE SAGA OF DARREN SHAN, the DEMONATA and more recently the SAGA OF LARTEN CREPSLEY and ZOM-B. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, particularly if the others are as brilliant as this! There are some disturbing/violent scenes throughout which are described in great detail so if you really hate gore I'd suggest skipping, but if you don't particularly mind gore I'd give it a go as it does feature a good story. Btw I’m an adult in my 50’s and have read a huge range of books so don’t let the fact that they are teen books put you off!From here, life is never the same but Grubbs finds that there is magic that can fight and defeat the demons, if not Lord Loss himself. Running to ten books in total, The Demonata cemented Shan's place as the Master Of Children's Horror. One night, he finds the mutilated bodies of his family and encounters Lord Loss, a gruesome human-like demon who sets his two familiars, Vein and Artery, on Grubbs.
No matter what age this book will be scary, mainly because Darren Shan doesn't shy away from topics that others might not deem appropriate for children. The movie rights to Cirque Du Freak were bought by Universal, and the first movie (which combined elements from the first three books in the series) was released in October 2009, starring newcomer Chris Massoglia as Darren Shan, along with a wide array of established stars such as Josh Hutcherson, John C Reilly, Salma Hayek, Willem Defoe and Ken Watanabe. I had to keep reminding myself constantly that it was fiction with supernatural things happening so it was supposed to be unrealistic.Turning to look he sees Dervish, with his senses regained, holding a tin of paint and a woollen scarf. His speech pattern is characterised by a tone of immense sadness, coupled with the use of quite a sophisticated vocabulary; he rarely uses abbreviations, and always addresses characters by their full names as opposed to nicknames. There’s a specific point at the end of the book that devastated me, but the humour really lifted things up, but didn’t take away the fact that something horrific just happened, it eases you into a sense of feeling safe, like you can breathe.
