About this deal

The underdeveloped metaphors along with the insistence of talking about the same themes that have already been discussed in plenty of other poetry collections before made me give this book only 1 star - it brings to the literary scene absolutely nothing new. In these short and potent stanzas she makes it clear that while she's been able to lay down the ghosts that have haunted her own self-worth, loving herself back to health after the mental and physical exhaustion of weathering constant aggressions is a long and continuous process.

In Being in Your Body, Róisín asks: “what would life be like without the negativity that surrounds our bodies? this felt like a very twitter thread-y take on these topics with an occasional sprinkle of SAT words. The illustrations also add a nice touch and bring depth to certain themes discussed in the poetry collection. A lot of it hit me really hard—Fariha Roisin is not afraid to pack a punch, but there are also some really beautiful poems about self-love and empowerment. The thing is that those poems weren’t that great and the solipsistic emotional ones were her mediocre best. From ‘time means everything’ ( No therapy for him, years of body dysmorphia, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, feelings of disgust, self-loathing, tears and hysteria every time I see a goddam fucking child that could’ve been ours) to ‘je ne suis pas folle’ ( why is it that as women we have to validate our stories?

The greatest scam is us believing that you’re better than us, when you stole all that we were and sold it back, convincing us of our inferiority, spitting on our graves. She seeks to re-educate throughout, such as in ‘what 9/11 did to us’ – 2,976 Americans died that day. That being said i found some of these poems to be beautiful and captivating and others were perhaps a bit weaker and left me confused. I also really loved the artwork, i think the cover and inside art is really beautiful and goes with the book contents really well. mothers’ is particularly powerful ( when i look in the mirror, sometimes i see them, looking back, eyes droopy, weary from the weight of womanhood, tired of the throes of masculinity, patriarchy, white supremacy, they mourn it too.
