In The Lollipop Shoes, Vianne and her two daughters Anouk and Rosette, are now running a Chocolaterie located on a cobbled street of Montmatre; the last village in Paris. On the surface, life seems good; Anouk goes to school; Vianne has finally found a niche for herself. In many respects, Vianne and Zozie are different sides of the same coin, shaped by life and by the choices that they have made. Following my trip to Paris and in anticipation of Joanne Harris’s forthcoming novel, Peaches for Monsieur le Cure, I decided to re-read The Lollipop Shoes, the follow-up to Harris’s wonderful Chocolat. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree.

This is a sequel to Chocolat, and having loved that book, having been enchanted by the characters, I thought I'd love this. I've read three of her books and don't intend to stop there, so I shall see if that idea holds true for her other books.

And so often the shoes have magical properties, suggesting that our modern fascination for all things footwear may actually be very old… Zozie’s shoes are an expression of her; they’re wild, colourful, impractical and more than a little dangerous. The point I liked about the book is the way it illustrates how for your kids, you want to choose the best option for them to keep them safe like Vianne or Yanne does. In 2000, her 1999 novel CHOCOLAT was adapted to the screen, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. She is unusual among Harris' characters in that her motives are never made entirely clear - she remains a mystery until the end. This book has Vianne and her (now two) daughters inhabiting Montmartre, and trying to live as "normal" people. The novel doesn't end in a clinch, but in a battle of the broomsticks played out over the rooftops of Notre Dame.
