About this deal

Storytelling that relies on tired cliches that frame women as hapless gold-digging victims who are lucky to have an ancient, alcoholic ex-cop on their case is a literary tradition we can do without. He wrote his first Harry Hole novel, The Bat, in Australia while taking a break from work and this was published in Norway in 1997. In Part 3, everything unlocks, it starts to slot into place, we learn things, we grow in understanding- or do we?

It takes all of Hole’s ingenuity to uncover what must be the most unusual method of murder in contemporary crime fiction. The story is filled with red herrings, surprises, and misdirection, and I give Jo Nesbo high marks for a creative plot. A lot of the regulars that have worked with Harry are back and in many ways, it’s as if Harry had never left the force.

But like many bands for example know, the quality of your product decreases when there's nowhere left to go. It’s best to start at the beginning to see not only Harry’s growth but the growth of other characters as well. This book is, at times, a touch grim, the truth behind what happens and why a little … how should I put this? When I first invented Harry he was more of a camera lens for the reader, so he was meant to be your stereotype of a hard-boiled detective,” he says.

The details surrounding the killer and the murders is also quite telling in shaping what happens throughout the book, leaving readers squeamish at times. But the legendary Harry Hole is gone—fired from the force, drinking himself to oblivion in Los Angeles. Richard quickly earns a reputation as an outcast, and when a classmate named Tom goes missing, everyone suspects the new, angry boy is responsible for his disappearance.

The body of one of the young women is found and the mutilation suggests she was the victim of a serial killer. In 2019 we left Harry Hole in the last book of the series Knife with his darkest personal challenge yet but here finally comes a Harry Hole worth case again. Twist follows twist follows twist, and Harry and his gang and the police get things wrong repeatedly. Plot development is always key to the story and Nesbø does not shirk in this thirteenth book of the series.
