About this deal

Out of all of the polarizing whiskey that has rolled out of Old Forester in the last 5+ years, there seems to be little fanfare over Statesman. Those dates become a rich and spicy sticky toffee pudding with a thick brandy butter topping next to a hint of oatmeal raisin cookies. If Brown-Forman really wanted to make an interesting bourbon, barreling some bourbon at 100 proof for a future release would be a more accurate reflection of a prohibition style whiskey. The mid-palate had a slight dark chocolate-covered espresso bean feel to it that led to a finish that was slightly bitter and full of dark fruit and warm spice. The maple flavor takes a cinnamony hint in the aftertaste, keeping it sweet enough to balance the toasted wood in the mid-palate.

Damn if 1920 is not one of the richest, most nuanced and complex, and downright delicious bourbons out there. Enthusiasts labeled it as dessert on a bottle because of its sweetness with rich cherry and oak notes. This one ticks off all the boxes: it sips elegantly neat, tastes great in a highball and plays well with juices and other cocktail modifiers. In addition to Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon, the other whiskeys in the Whiskey Row series are 1870 Original Batch, 1897 Bottled in Bond and 1910 Old Fine Whisky.Worth noting, the former Old Forester Signature has a 100 proof for 50% abv, while the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, released first in 2002, has a 95 U. While the hoarded masses reflexively gravitate towards the hype, like tourists to Times Square, they’re leaving some sensational liquids untouched on the shelf. Palate: Starts quite sweet with caramel and maple syrup, though swiftly develops intense oak-y elements and hints of pine resin.

They quickly dissipate and leave a long-lingering finish without further introduction of new flavors, but a pleasing end to those introduced on the palate. Dark caramel coats layers of malt nuttiness and sweet graham cracker all warmed by green peppercorn and coriander spice brightened with a hint of cedar. During prohibition, the Old Forester distillery was allowed to stay open and make medicinal whiskey. A decent choice that doesn’t blow either your money, not your mind, the Old Forester is easy on the palate.

This is one of my all-time favorite whiskies, and one that I don’t see getting the love it deserves. It is the only bourbon continuously sold by the same company that has been available for sale before, during and after Prohibition. The finish marries the dark chocolate to the almost chili pepper spice on the medium-length finish as flourishes of orange oils, wet leather, and salted caramel kettle corn linger on your nicely warmed senses. Sweetness comes from the bakery: pecan pie, chocolate cream and rich vanilla, with a little vanilla taffy, brown sugar and a nutty chocolate covered toffee thrown in for good measure.
